Led by dance artist Justine Reeve, this practical one-day workshop explores how to develop dance improvisation with clarity, structure, and purpose. Participants will engage in guided explorations and structured tasks designed to share how dancers can build confidence and develop movement responses, focusing on how movement qualities can be generated, refined, and shaped into choreography.
The session will also examine how to effectively structure improvisation classes, embedding clear progression, engagement, and creative intention. Participants will explore practical strategies for supporting dancers in generating their own material, alongside approaches to refining and developing ideas into performance work.
Justine shares accessible, adaptable tools throughout, offering transferable strategies to support confident teaching, creative learning, and the development of purposeful improvisation practice for teachers and dance professionals of all background.
10.00am - 11.00am Session 1: Games for innovation
Games are great as warm ups but what if dancers also created their own games?
11.15am - 12.45pm Session 2: Modes of dance improvisation
How do you get a dancer to move and explore a creative task, how do they move without an understanding of what is expected? This will give you the tools to go from idea to freely exploring.
12.45pm - 1.30pm lunch
1.30pm - 2.30pm Session 3: Using modes with creative tasks
Using a series of set creative tasks that will help develop dancers skills in both improvisation and choreography.
2.45pm - 4pm : Developing and Structuring
Exploring ways to develop movement material and to structure a choreography. Also how to structure a 6 week scheme of work.
